At ACENZ, we have 185 Ordinary Member firms which make up close to 11,000 individuals. While ACENZ Membership is for the company rather than the individual, we have a variety of firm sizes which make up who we are. Of those firms, close to 85% are SMEs in the 1 to 49 staff range. Because they represent the majority of who we are, we've created some helpful resources to support our core Members.
85% of ACENZ Members are SMEs (up to 50 staff)
What formerly was known as the Practice Notes, is now undergoing a comprehensive review and being combined into one document known as the SME Handbook. This resource is for ACENZ Members only and will require a login to download once this project is complete. However, we'd like to give you a sneak peek at the type of content that can be found inside the pages. You'll find topics such as:
- How to organise a consulting firm with types of ownership and governance
- laws and regulations
- Guidelines for health & safety
- Sample employment agreements
- Remuneration models
- Fee guidelines and tips on calculation of charge out rates
- Tips on accounting including cash flow, invoicing, and financial planning
- Risk managment
- and so much more!
In addition to the SME Handbook, ACENZ often posts links to other useful resources and tools. Take a look below to find out more on some of our more popular references.

Zero Harm Reporting App
Our good friends at the Civil Contractors New Zealand (CCNZ) association have teamed up with NZ Transport Agency to develop this FREE app for SMEs. The app is designed to report key safety messages to your company, incidents, near misses, good practice and suggestions in real time. It was built around industry best practice and encourages a more proactive effort in the construction industry. Find out more about the Safety App and get the app online here.
One of the best resources for SME (or any size) firms is the Employment NZ website. Here you can find an employment agreement builder tool, tips for hiring an employee, building business confidence, tips on charge out rates, or even a guide to writing a business plan. Check out all the great resources they offer by exploring their website here.
