The Diversity Agenda

Engineers and architects create the world around us, making people’s lives better, healthier and more connected. We want the architecture and engineering professions to represent everyone, so the world you create is as diverse and inspiring as the people in it.

The Diversity Agenda is an award-winning programme and movement that aims to help engineering and architecture firms become more diverse and inclusive through awareness, empowerment and action.

It's a joint initiative by ACE New Zealand, Engineering New Zealand and Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects.

The vision is for our industry to be inclusive, respectful and representative of society – where everyone feels safe and valued in their workplaces, and young people want to be engineers and architects.

The Diversity Agenda is here to make better professions for all – women, Māori, Pacific Peoples, LGBTQIA+, disabled, neurodiverse and other minority groups.

It encourages engineering and architecture firms, and firms that work within these industries, to sign up as members to show they’re serious about diversity and inclusion, and to benefit from access to the resources, events, tools and tips.

It also encourages business leaders to take a step further and sign the Diversity Agenda Accord, which is a clear set of principles that they commit to and a key tool for achieving change. Chief executives and business owners must submit data annually for the Accord Industry Impact Report, making them publicly accountable for achieving truly diverse industries.

The movement continues to gain momentum. The Diversity Agenda team have countless conversations across Aotearoa with firms and individuals about the benefit of the programme.

National and regional events bring together engineering and architecture professionals to hear from guest speakers who are leading the way in diversity and inclusion and championing the cause.

It provides a supportive space for the growing network of diversity and inclusion representatives in engineering and architecture to discuss challenges, celebrate the wins, work on new initiatives and learn together.

It publishes interviews with industry leaders, celebrates individuals and programmes that are making a difference, and shares top tips to help businesses become more diverse and inclusive.

And it's picked up a few accolades along the way. It was awarded ‘Best Diversity and Inclusion Initiative’ at the FIDIC International Federation of Consulting Engineers Excellence Awards 2019 in Mexico City, and was a finalist in the ‘Emerging Diversity and Inclusion’ category at the Diversity Awards NZ 2019.
