Genetically modified and courageous - David Downs on beating adversity with optimism and innovation
Self-titled ‘genetically modified optimist’ David Downs’ experience of finding courage through adversity following his cancer diagnosis makes him a great fit for this year’s Futurespace MC.
An entertaining and inspiring speaker with an uplifting message, we’re thrilled to harness David’s optimism and innovative mindset for the conference, which is focused on courageous change in a challenging market.
In 2017, the author, actor and ex-comedian initially thought he had a mild dose of the flu but, two weeks and many tests later, he was told he had advanced blood cancer and was straight into chemotherapy. Undeterred, David did what many optimists would do – put on his good undies, headed to hospital and started writing to tell the world about his experiences.
Through 11 rounds of chemotherapy, eight weeks in hospitals and over nine months’ treatment, David held fast to his belief that optimism is the best approach when faced with adversity. He also shared his story of doing this through weekly reports and ultimately encouraged hundreds of people that a positive mindset is the best medicine.
Cancer challenges aside, David has had a successful career in the private and public sector with senior roles at organisations such as Microsoft and New Zealand Trade and Enterprise. He has also published two highly successful books on New Zealand innovation – No.8 Re-wired and No.8 Recharged.
As Futurespace MC, David will share his experience of being courageous enough to ask for help, pursuing his own personal sense of direction when fighting challenges, building up resilience, and some of the mental practices he followed that helped him through his cancer journey.
Whether you are an individual practitioner, an industry or business leader, a hiring manager or a business owner, David will inspire you to take a courageous step forward and bring those around you on the journey.
