Size no barrier to winning an ACE Award, says Riley

Following success at the 2025 ACE Awards, Riley Consultants used its win to strengthen its public profile.

Riley was engaged to deliver a solution mitigating the operational impact of flooding from the Rakaia River on client Central Plains Water Limited’s ability to consistently deliver irrigation water to shareholders for food and fibre production. Its innovative labyrinth weir design was an example of creating sustainable, high-value infrastructure to ensure critical water supply during periods of flooding, safeguarding agricultural productivity and local livelihoods.

With expressions of interest now open for the 2026 ACE Awards, Riley Principal Engineering Geologist Leah King tells us how company size is no barrier to winning an award.

Riley Consultants at the 2025 ACE Awards

Why did you enter the ACE Awards?

“We entered because we had delivered a project that we were incredibly proud of, one our client was genuinely thrilled with, and we wanted to share that success. The awards felt like the right platform to showcase the engineering ingenuity behind the project and to celebrate the hard work of everyone involved.”

What did winning an award mean for you and your team? How did it feel?

“Winning was really meaningful. It validated the commitment, technical innovation, and collaborative approach the team brought to the project. It was a lovely achievement to be able to share with our fantastic clients Central Plains Water Limited. As a medium‑sized consultancy, we were particularly proud as it shows we can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with larger firms on a national stage.”

Have you used the award internally and / or externally?

“Absolutely. Internally, the award has been a great morale booster and helps showcase a project that is a standout example of excellence in delivery and client service.

“Externally, it has strengthened our profile. We’ve highlighted it in proposals, capability statements, on our website, social media platforms and at conferences.”

Would you encourage others to enter the ACE Awards? Why?

“Definitely. The ACE Awards are a valuable opportunity to reflect on a project’s achievements and celebrate what makes our industry special. The process encourages teams to reflect on the successes of the project, something we don’t always make time for. It’s a great way to share knowledge, inspire others, and contribute to the ongoing improvement of engineering consulting excellence in New Zealand.”
