Meet our Otago/Southland Regional Chair Scott Bosworth

Scott Bosworth is Senior Associate at Frequency in Dunedin and the new ACE New Zealand Regional Chair for the Otago/Southland region. After spending many years overseas working on large-scale international projects, Scott returned to his home town of Dunedin in 2023 to start up Frequency's office. We asked Scott about his career and the strengths he brings to the role.

Tell us about your career

I am an experienced project manager and mechanical engineer with 16 years' experience, much of which has been spent working internationally on large-scale engineering projects. With a Masters of Engineering Management degree, I began my career in construction as a field engineer working my way through construction supervision into client-side project management.

I have worked across multiple sections in New Zealand and abroad. This includes various roles from mechanical engineering design consultant, main contractor field engineer and field supervision, client project manager, and, more recently, project management consultant.

The sectors I have worked in include industrial, aluminum, water, commercial buildings, rail, and health, and this includes projects and clients in the public and private sectors. This broad range of experience gives me a good understanding of the differences and similarities each organisation and sector brings, and what’s important to consultants.

What are the consulting and engineering strengths of your region?

While Dunedin is my home and where I grew up, I have spent the vast majority of my career living and working overseas and, more recently, in Auckland. I returned to Dunedin in late 2023 to establish an office for Frequency with the intent to settle long term here in the South.

I have thoroughly enjoyed returning home, reconnecting with familiar faces and learning about the awesome work and capability that exists in the Southern regions.  This, however, means that I am still learning what strengths this region has and is something I will grow to understand through my involvement with ACE and ongoing work here with Frequency.

Given the geographical and environmental characteristics of the Southern regions, I would expect to find strengths in civil, seismic, water, environmental, renewable energy and transport to name a few.

What strengths do you bring to the Regional Chair role?

I am fairly new to ACE and also to the region, having only returned to Dunedin last year after being away for 20 years. I aim to learn more about the unique strengths of the Otago/Southland regions and ensure these are promoted, help strengthen local industry networks and help lead local initiatives. There will be an element of discovery and learning for me as I settle into the role here.

Tell us something interesting about yourself

I spent five years living and working in China and did my best to read, write and speak Mandarin in my last few years there. Unfortunately, languages fade quickly when not used daily, at least this is my excuse.
