Driving better consultant and client engagement

About

The lifecycle of client investment in construction and infrastructure projects is complex. How a project is defined, set up and procured from the outset has significant implications on the cultural, economic, social and environmental outcomes.

How we plan, procure and deliver projects can also generate efficiencies, reduce cost, and enhance productivity and innovation. Strong systems, processes and relationships between consultants and clients sit at the heart of achieving these outcomes.

ACE is embarking on a campaign to drive better consultant and client relationships and engagement practices to improve collaboration, efficiencies, and the management of risks, with the goal of improving productivity, time and cost efficiency, outcomes and positive impacts on the economy, society and the environment.

This campaign has two parts:

  • Leading a national conversation on what good engagement looks like and why it is critical, underpinned by six engagement principles for consultants and clients

  • Developing guidance to help influence the systems, processes and behaviours for good engagement throughout the project lifecycle, aligned to the six principles

The kaupapa is clear: how can we use our influence to collectively build a more cost-effective and high-performing infrastructure system for Aotearoa?

Six engagement principles for consultants and clients

  • Engage with integrity and respect
Relationships based on integrity, respect, honesty and humility lead to better project outcomes. Appreciate and respect each other’s context, constraints, business drivers and expertise.

  • Ensure strong governance, leadership and decision-making
Clear governance, leadership and decision-making increases productivity and efficiency. Adopt accountability frameworks and define roles and responsibilities.

  • Expect change and plan for it
Changes are inevitable and should be planned for. Evaluate the potential impacts of changes and create processes for approving, documenting and communicating the changes.

  • Clarify purpose and outcomes
Having a shared vision, well-defined purpose and clear outcomes brings stakeholders together and creates a good working environment. Define and communicate them.

  • Balance risk while creating space for innovation
Managing risks while fostering innovative mindsets is an important lever for positive engagement. Implement values-based risk assessment and outcomes-based procurement.

  • Communicate transparently
Honest, timely and transparent communication is key to successful relationships. Share information openly and establish clear expectations for information flows.

Check out the full discussion document for a full explanation of each principle, the barriers that get in the way, how to bring the principle to life, and a summary of the workshop findings.

How the principles will be used

These principles will support ACE’s advocacy around better procurement, contracting, partnerships and driving better engagement between consultants and clients.

Clearly articulating the issues and opportunities, what good looks like, and how to enact each principle in practice will support us to embed these behaviours and showcase how clients and consultants can work together better and drive positive change in the industry.

These principles will be shared with ACE member firms, central and local government clients, private sector clients and other firms working in the consulting and construction and infrastructure sectors.
