Why business leaders must step back to move forward

How Lautrec set up its quality management system

ISO 9001 is the international standard for organisational excellence and the world’s most widely recognised quality management standard. It allows firms to continually monitor, manage and improve quality across all operations.  At first glance, the amount of work involved can appear daunting and dissuade companies from going any further, particularly smaller organisations who may question the need for it, such as Lautrec Technology Group who were initially hesitant. However, following requests from Auckland Council to provide evidence of quality management systems for producer statement authorships, Lautrec decided to implement ISO and found the process straightforward and the benefits numerous and ongoing.  We spoke to Lautrec Chief Executive and Director Juliet Hyatt-Brown about how the company approached implementing ISO and why it’s keen to maintain it.

How SMEs can adapt to a changing workforce – with HainesAttract

The workforce is changing – are you ready?   Although the recent slowdown in recruitment might be masking it, New Zealand’s engineering sector is in the middle of a massive shift. The Australian migration – why relocating may not leave you better off

Australia is often perceived as providing financial gains for construction and infrastructure workers. However, new research commissioned by Waihanga Ara Rau, the Workforce Development Council for Construction and Infrastructure, may challenge this long-held belief and motivate employers and recruiters to set the record straight to aid employee retention and encourage the return of those living abroad.   Is the grass really greener? carried out by Allen + Clarke and combining quantitative analysis and interviews with returning workers, offers a detailed comparison of key factors influencing relocation decisions, including income levels, housing affordability, and cost of living. It found shrinking income disparities, higher taxes, and soaring house prices are making Australia a less attractive destination for many Kiwi workers looking to relocate.   We asked Waihanga Ara Rau about these surprising findings and how our industry could use them to its advantage.

Adventures at sea: remote working, parenting, and sailing across the world

Do you have a dream? Are you living your best life or waiting to action your wish list until you reach that next career rung or even retire? Well, Charlotte Philpott didn’t wait. The BMC chartered structural engineer believes life is meant to be lived.   It was this mindset, following Covid interruptions to the original travel itinerary of Charlotte and her husband, Daniel, that led to their family trip of a lifetime with a twist. Remote working while sailing for 2 ½ years from Croatia to Tahiti with a baby on board anyone?  And, while many might shudder at the prospect, Charlotte, who along with Daniel, grew up on the water sailing small one-person boats, says prior experience isn’t always a prerequisite.  “We prepped for our first ocean crossing next to some people who had no sailing experience. We were worried about all of these things and prepping for many different situations because we knew what could happen, whereas they were so relaxed because they probably didn’t know. In some ways the naivety is good – provided you make it.”  We asked Charlotte how she made flexible working and an ocean-crossing adventure a successful reality, and if she had any tips for others wanting to jump on board the remote-working dream.

Futurespace Courageous Conversations: Embracing digital transformation

Are you ready to embrace the changes that accompany Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications? Are you upskilling and reskilling your staff to avoid being left behind? AI is already impacting our industries heightening the need for companies to start preparing now for a future with AI.  Digital technologies can aid efficiency and help organisations navigate the significant disruptions experienced in our industry in recent years, including skills gaps, cost increases and sustainability challenges. It is essential to welcome digital adoption if you are to have a place in a more advanced and productive industry.   The State of Digital Adoption in the Construction Industry 2024 report shows skills and financing are the biggest barriers to digital adoption. But businesses that invest in new technologies are reporting strong returns, with the use of an additional technology associated with higher revenue and profit growth, and more projects delivered on time and under budget.   We spoke to Tonkin + Taylor Group Managing Director Tim Fisher following his attendance at the the FIDIC (International Federation of Consulting Engineers) Global Leadership Forum (GLF) Summit in Geneva earlier this year. He said that, by 2030, it is estimated 30% of hours worked today will be automated by AI. Read Tim’s comments here.  In September, the FIDIC GLF published a paper about How artificial intelligence can unlock a new future for infrastructure following the emergence of a recurring theme about how we can use technology and AI to supercharge progress, reduce waste, and improve project delivery.   Consult Australia has also just published its Enabling Digital by Default white paper, which presents a practical, industry-informed roadmap to seamlessly integrate digital practices across the infrastructure sector.  At the 2024 Futurespace workshop, we asked attendees to explore how businesses can integrate digital technologies like AI and automation to streamline operations and enhance customer experiences, and the impact of generative AI on job roles.

What will your workday look like in one year, let alone ten years? And where will you work? Will your company have an office, or will everyone work remotely?  This is all part of the changing nature of work as we know it. We have fast become accustomed to change since Covid first emerged, but knowing how to navigate it successfully can be a challenge.   At the 2024 Futurespace workshops we asked attendees about the trends shaping the future of work, such as remote work, and the challenges and opportunities of managing a hybrid workforce.  ACE New Zealand Chief Executive Helen Davidson says the sharing by attendees of their personal or businesses’ experiences in this area shows there are multiple solutions to the challenges and opportunities presented, and these can be tailored according to need and the employee experience being curated within the business.

Futurespace Courageous Conversations: Value of consultants

What makes you or your company stand out? Why should a potential client choose you? What is your expertise and how do you sell it?  In this challenging climate it is even more essential to be able to sell your expertise effectively. Win Without Pitching founder and 2024 Futurespace keynote speaker Blair Enns says even seasoned sales veterans often push too hard: “The sale is the sample of the engagement to follow. It is where the roles are assigned. If we play the needy vendor in the sale, we will be relegated to that status in the engagement. If we want to lead in the engagement, we must lead in the sale.”    We spoke to Blair in the lead-up to this year’s conference about how selling consultants’ expertise is different to selling goods or transactional services. His latest book, The Four Conversations: A New Model for Selling Expertise, is about selling the way you practice. He says: “Your first job is to be the expert advisor or practitioner. Your second job is selling that expertise.” Read our interview with Blair here.  At the Futurespace workshops, we asked attendees to discuss the most important qualities for a successful consultant and strategies for influencing clients and decision-makers on the value of consultants and the services provided. Below we share the thoughts that emerged.

Futurespace courageous conversations: Leadership in times of change

Good leadership is always challenging, but it is even more critical in times of uncertainty and change when leaders must be daring and lead with courage.   If we are going to galvanise and empower our teams and clients to thrive into the future, we must know how to lead through change, which is the one constant in our lives today. It’s about understanding the hearts and minds of change, the shifting balance between pace and momentum, and the importance of taking people with you.  Futurespace 2024 keynote speaker Kemi Nekvapil spoke of the four skillsets of daring leaders:  Rumbling with vulnerability: taking emotional risks without a guaranteed outcome. We step into the arena and even if we fail, we fail greatly. Living into our values as leaders: to do this, we must understand our top three or four values. Do the 100 values exercise here to find out yours. Braving trust: this is about self-trust and trust with others. Braving stands for Boundaries, Reliability, Accountability, Vault (confidentiality), Integrity (choosing what is right instead of what is fast, comfortable, or easy), Non-Judgment, Generosity. Rising strong: rising above challenges and leading teams through tough moments to build trust and support.  You can also read our interview with Kemi about being courageous here.  At the workshop sessions at Futurespace, we asked attendees for their thoughts on effective leadership during significant changes, such as economic downturns or technological disruptions. ACE Chief Executive Helen Davidson said sharing the diverse insights contributed will help leaders effectively guide their organisations and support employees to build resilience and foster innovation in these changing times.

Bringing te ao Māori to client projects

Do you counteroffer if your top employee quits

Your number one staff member just quit – do you counter-offer? Retaining great staff is vital to an organisation’s success. It is essential for a healthy culture, continuity, succession planning, costs, institutional knowledge and ultimately the organisation’s results. A tight labour market and inflation means people are starting to take stock and check if they are first happy in their role, but secondly if they are receiving the remuneration and benefits they feel they deserve. If managers start taking their eye off the ball they could be in the position where some of the best employees start leaving to greener pastures. So what should a manager do if they are surprised when their top staff member quits? The short answer is if you’re surprised then chances are you haven’t been managing your employee relationships as well as you should. We interviewed Katie Kemp, Principal Consultant, from People&co to tell us how managers should tackle this situation.
